Chad Wolf, Acting US Secretary of Homeland Security announced he is stepping down at 11:59 PM January 11, 2021. Although he originally planned to remain in his job until the end of this Administration, he is resigning due to his criticizing President Trump over the riot at the Capitol last week. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Pete Gaynor will be the new acting secretary. To read more see:

Acting Secretary Wolf is also over the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) which is part of the Homeland Security Department. His appointment was questioned by a federal court which resulted in a federal judge placing on hold the proposed USCIS outrageous fee increases.
As reported in the IAJGS Records Access Alert on September 29, 2020, US District Court Judge Jeffrey White of the Northern District of California found “serious questions” as the legitimacy of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) fee increase because the acting Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security was not properly appointed to the position. While appointed by President Trump, the Senate never voted to confirm him. Following Wolf’s criticism of President Trump response to the riot, the White House pulled his nomination.
The final rule in its entirety was stayed pending final adjudication. The federal court judge said, “Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Wolf and Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Secretary of DHS Cuccinelli and all persons under their direction are enjoined from implementing or enforcing the Final Rule or any part of the rule.”
The proposed fee increases for genealogists are: raising the search fee from $65 to $240 and then the cost of the actual file from $65 to $385 means your charges will increase from $130 to possibly $625. If you are considering ordering any documents from USCIS this would be an appropriate time to do so as we are not aware when the stay will be lifted or what if anything the Biden Administration may do regarding the proposed fee increases.
