[Records-Access-Alerts] (Australia)

National Archives Struggling Affecting Preservation and Accessibility of Records

n 2019 the IAJGS Records Access Alert reported on National Archives of Australia is struggling with budget and staffing reductions that are affecting their capacity to secure, preserve, maintain and make accessible to the public many records including tens of thousands of deteriorating audio visual that will be lost by 2025. “the National Archives could potentially be in breach of Part 5 Section 24 of the Act due to unauthorized loss of records.”

Now an internal review has found the National Archives of Australia is struggling to meet its legal obligations to preserve government records and make documents public.  Over a year ago ex-senior pubic servant David Tune provided the internal report of the government of the function and efficiency of the National Archives of Australia. The government sat on the report since then and resisted making it public despite Freedom of Information requests from Senator Rex Patrick.

As  a result of the media asking questions, the report was made available on March 12th.

As reported in the Guardian, it found, ““In particular, the National Archives has struggled to fulfil its mandate and to invest in the systems it needs in the digital age to meet this mandate. Resources are needed to invest in contemporary technologies that will meet the volume of digital transfer, preservation, storage, declassification, and public access required under the Act.… As observed in recent independent audits, this has impacted the National Archives service delivery to both government and the Australian public.”
