Shelves of military records stand nearly 30 feet high at the National Archives in St. Louis. (Lenin Hurtado/National Archives)
Are you looking for military records for an ancestor? The current issue of the Military Times has an article that gives nine steps to help you obtain records and awards. The Military Times received advice from the National Personnel Records Center--NPRC ( St. Louis, MO) for basic steps. There was a devastating fire in July 1973 which destroyed 18 million personnel files—but even if the file you are searching was destroyed some information may be recovered. That is because the fire destroyed individual records and unit records –were stored elsewhere-in the National Archives—but they are not indexed so the more information you can provide in your request form the better chance of finding the correct unit record.
To read the article see:
Original url:
The (US) National Archives National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis Missouri has information on military records—not awards. Awards is a function of each military service department. Requests for the issuance or replacement of military service medals, decorations and awards should be directed to the specific branch of the military in which the veteran served. However, for the Army and Air Force the NPRC the NPRC will verify the awards to which a veteran is entitled and forward the request along with the records verification to the appropriate service department for issuance of the medals. For forms requesting information on service, the National Archives has a page with information. Go to: https://www.archives.gov/veterans and see what is available online and more on awards.
Philadelphia City Archives are relocating effective December 15, 2017. However, they have to temporarily close to the public to facilitate their relocation. They will be closed through August 2018. During the closure period they will continue to fulfill requests for copies of deeds, but not for historical research and/or academic research purposes. They will reopen their new location to the public on September 1, 2018. The new address is 456 N. 5th Street in Philadelphia. Information on where to mail deed requests and how to contact their office is on the notice available at: http://www.phila.gov/records/pdfs/External%20Archive%20Notice.pdf
The Philadelphia City Archives has birth and death certificates from July 1, 1860 through June 30, 1915. For records from 1906 to the present are available from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Division of Vital Records at http://www.health.pa.gov/MyRecords/Certificates/Pages/11596.aspx#.Wh3e4nlryUk
For information for genealogical records scroll down on the aforementioned url to "genealogy" . Pennsylvania has embargo periods for accessing birth and death records—birth records: 1906 to 1911 and death records 1906 to 1966 are available from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission: see--
An article on the Philadelphia City Archives move may be read at:
As genealogists we are as a group people who use digital files and their preservation is critical to our genealogy—it is the core of our records whether they be private, or governmental. International Digital Preservation Day is held the last Thursday of every November—November 30, 20-17 being the first such day. It will bring together institutions and individuals across the globe to celebrate preserved collections.
According to the Digital Preservation Coalition, "the aim of the day is to create greater awareness of digital preservation that will translate into a wider understanding which permeates all aspects of society – business, policy making, personal good practice. Pervasive, changing and ubiquitous, digital technologies are a defining feature of our age."
Many organizations are participating. To read more about this, see:
