Hobarton Guardian, or, True Friend of Tasmania (Hobart, Tas. : 1847 - 1854), Wednesday 12 October 1853, page 3

The " Adelaide Register" contains intelligence from the Swan River settlement to the 24th of August. The following account appears of the mortality on board the ship Robert Small, which arrived at Fremantle on the 19th August, with 301 male convicts, 27 pensioners, 22 women, and 49 children: — " The Robert Small convict ship, has been more unfortunate'than any which have touched here. She left Ireland on the 1st May, but was compelled to put into Rio ou the 12 th of June. She put in, inconsequence of her pumps being choked, owing to the nature of tho balast During the passage she lost five of the prisoners and three of the guard, in consequence, it is said, of the unhealthy state of the ship. It appears she was ballasted with swamp earth, which generated pestilential vapours, causing disease, and, uufortuuately death. The crew are described to have been both incompetent and mutinous. The orderly behaviour and general good conduct of the convicts is particularly mentioned in the reports received, especially upon the ship [catching fire (an accident by the way, likely to have been attended with very serious results), when they rendered every aid, and contributed materially to save the ship.
