My Grandfather


Roy Leonard Swadling 
MM WWI . b 23 Feb 1898 Wisemans Ferry d 17 Feb 1981 Orange.
A Corporal in First 33rd Bn serving in France under Lt Whittey. Arrived in the trenches of the Western front in Dec 1916, fought at Ypres and at the Battle of Messines launched on 7 Jun 1917. He was initially part of the 36th and fought at Passchendaele on 12 Oct. In the Spring of 1918 the Bn fought at Villers-Bretonneux. Pa was gassed and luckily escaped death when utility belt was hit by shrapnel, deflecting a bullet. Awarded Military Medal for entering a trench during daylight reconnaissance of No Man's Land and a subsequent raid on the enemy front line to capture two Germans. He returned to Australia.
